Voice Disorders

Dysphonia (voice disorder) occurs when the vibration of the vocal cords is disrupted. This can be caused by a range of factors including infection, vocal misuse, phono-traumatic behaviours, cancer etc. Medical conditions such as respiratory disease, neurological disorders, muscular-skeletal problems, high-emotional stress etc can also contribute.

Voice therapy is similar to physiotherapy for the vocal system and aims to re-programme muscle patterns for good voice production. Voice Therapy therefore provides treatment for:

  • Hoarse voice

  • Vocal care and hygiene

  • Voice rehabilitation following surgery/changes to vocal quality

I treat a range of disorders including:

  • Voice development training

  • Vocal projection

  • Vocal flexibility

  • Voice stamina and confidence

  • Singing Voice

  • Extending vocal range

  • Development of vocal qualities e.g. twang, falsetto, belting etc

  • Vocal cord nodules

  • Vocal cord palsy/paralysis

  • Muscle tension dysphonia

  • Aging voice

  • Voice optimisation in dystonia and spasmodic dysphonia

  • Paediatric dysphonia
